Kathgodam - Loharjung - Didina Village - Ali Bugyal - Ghora Lotani - Bhag Wabasa - Roopkund Lake - Bedni Budyal - Wan - Lohajung - Kathgodam
Day 1- Kathgodam to Loharjung
The best way to get to Kathgodam is the Ranikhet Express but one needs to book early to get reservations. As you get to Kathgodam the inviting views of the lower Himalyas welcome you and you can start visualising the mountain scenery ahead.
Onwards from Kathgodam you can take a Roadways Bus to Loharjung through the roadway. Mountain roads are narrow and full of sharp curves but the views are grand and green.
Day 2- Lohargunj to Didna Village (5.5 - 6.5 Hours Trek)
The track starts behind the bus stand and passes through mixed forests of Oak and deodhar. A easy walk take you in two and a half hours to Ruan Bagad, where there is an old bridge across the river Neel Ganga. Anotherroute can also get you here through the road from Wan. The walk is through Kulling Village after which there is a steep ascent to Ruan Bagad. The climb to Didna village is pretty steep.but you could easily get to Didna in one and a half hour. Through the day you would have had a fantastic mountain experience.
Day 3- Didna Village to Ali Bugyal (2.5 Hours Trek)
There are two routes to get to Ali Bugyal. One is to climb directly towards Ali Bugyal while the other is to detour via Tolpani. While the former is a difficuly and tough climb, the latter can take two hours longer. Either way its best to get to Ali Bugyal before noon to enjoy the breath taking views.
Day 4- Ali Bugyal to Ghora Lotani (3km)
The walk to Ghora Lotani is a fairly low gradient climb along along in a straight line. But you get great views on all sides. Some people spend a day acclimatizing to the altitude at this camp and you could choose to do the same.
Day 5-Ghora Lotani to Bhagwabasa (2km / 1.5 Hours Trek)
The big gain in altitude happens on this day and the trek to Bhagwabasa takes you to the realm of high altitude where you really need to take all the precautions that your guide will tell you about. This is to avoid the setting in of AMS. You climb through Kalu Vinayak in one and a half hour on a steep and zig-zag path up the mountain.
There are usually a few patches of snow on this route and you get great views.
Day 6- Bhagwabasa to Roopkund. Return to Bedni Bugyal (4-5 Hours Trek)
Finally you get to go to the Skeleton Lake. But you have to start very early, as early as 5 in the morning so that you avoid the melting and slushy snow that you get into if you are late. Its a three and a half hour walk to Roopkund.
You can climb to Junargali from Roopkund if the weather permits. It’s only a short climb and should not take more than half and hour, but you have to be careful as there may be some snow lying around which makes the descent tricky. You then return to Bhagwabasa
Day 7- Bedni Bugyal to Lohajung via Wan. Bedni to Wan (trek, 6 Hours) wan to lohajung (drive, 01 Hour)
On the trek to Wan you’ll see great views of Trishul if the weather is clear. It’s not a long walk and its extremely scenic. So you get really a great experience on your way back from this wonderful trek.Overall its a 6 and a half hour walk and then an hour’s drive to Loharjung.
Day 8- Loharjung to Kathgodam
End of the Lake trip but not the end of the beauty. Even on your way back you’ll marvel at the beauty of the Kumaon.

A decently demanding trek, the walking path is well made right up to the Lake. There is little or no change of injury on the trek. Since its very well frequented by local as well as avid trekkers, its quites safe and easy to evacuate someone in the unlikely event of mountain sickness or injury. Also as the route is either along a ridge or through grassy meadows, there is little or no change of getting lost or disoriented. Overall it is a good trip for newbies and experienced trekkers.
The scenery all along is absolutely fascinating with forest of rhododendron, cypress and oak. The scenery also changes as the trek progresses, with lusty green meadows (Bedini Bugyal and Ali Bugyal), rocky mountains and finally snow-capped mountains as one gets close to the lake which is also known as skeleton lake and the story of mountain disaster lies buried within.
